In the following hall named, “La Esencia de Córdoba,” or The Essence of Córdoba, one can appreciated the feeling Julio Romero de Torres had for his homeland. From the distance he paints with nostalgia for his city, the memory of its rive, the silence of its plazas, its monuments and its customes become the protagonists in this series of pieces, like “Virgen de los Faroles,” or The Virgin of the Lighthouses, “Ángeles y Fuensanta,” or Angles and Fuensanta, “Poemas de Córdoba,” or Poems of Córdoba where the ancient cultures of the city are remembered. In these pieces dark and gloomy tones converge and become characteristic of the last years of the painter’s life, in which his palette darkens. In this period, Julio Romero de Torres brings to his artwork literary painting and the Valle-Inclán influence is no longer seen. He deals in a peculiar and very personal way the traditional subject of still life in that he makes a mixed representation of still life and the human figure.
